Please take a look at an overview of the first grade curriculum. You can find this located under the 1st grade standards link. If you have any questions after checking it out, please let me know!
I can't believe we are diving into the 5th week of school. My students are working so hard. They are learning a lot and love doing centers and rotations in the classroom. Our reading goal for the month is to successful "read to self" with no interruptions for at least 20 minutes. We are well on our way to that. As a class we have read for 12 minutes straight without any off task behavior. I'm impressed. Below you will see how cozy we get while we read our "just right books".
Study Island is a new resource we will be using at school and that students can also use at home. Last week I sent home login information in each child's blue folder. If you need the login information again, just shoot me an email. I will be sending an email out to all parents this evening with directions on how to navigate and use the website.
We have successfully finished 5 full days of school. We are building a wonderful classroom community and continue learning more and more each day. This week we will be doing lots of assessments to help us get into the first grade groove.
In my newsletter this week I quickly touched on my camping and hiking at Shenandoah National Park. Below you will see a picture of myself and Mr. H at a lookout point after hiking to Lewis Falls. On May 7th, Mr. H and I will be running a 5K in DC called The Race for Hope which is raising money for brain cancer and brain tumor research. This is a cause very near and dear to my heart. Two of my grandparents passed away from brain tumors. My mom’s mom and my dad’s dad both had malignant brain tumors when they were in their 70s. I’d like to do all I can do to find some hope for this disease. If you’d like to check out our team page, please click below :
I hope you enjoyed your spring break. I stayed home and it was wonderful. Mr. H and I have been on the go nonstop lately so it was nice not to travel. I took full advantage of the gorgeous weather. I went on lots of runs on the Green Way, did a good amount of yard work and gardening, cooked and ate lots of food, visited with family, and did lots of reading.
We had a great first day back from spring break. The kiddos were able to get right back into the routine and did amazing. We started a new unit in math on three dimensional shapes and the students had a great time with it. We are looking forward to a fun week of learning. My favorite part of spring is seeing the Cherry Blossoms in Washington DC. Mr. H and I got engaged during Cherry Blossom Festival in 2010 so this time of year is still very special to me. We lived in DC for 7 years and never missed a year seeing the Cherry Blossoms. Can you believe third quarter is over? If our countdown is accurate then we only have 44 days of school left. We had a great week reviewing lots of what we learned over third quarter. We even filled our warm fuzzy jar for amazing behavior for the third time. I am so proud of this great class! Students also worked together this week to start building their playgrounds with UV ray protection during PLTW.
Happy spring everyone! We've been having a lot of fun in our classroom with our latest STEM project. Students have been working collaboratively in 6 groups planning, designing, and creating leprechaun traps. We had 6 very creative and different traps in our classroom. Unfortunately, we didn't catch a leprechaun. The students are in agreement that if we didn't have a long weekend we would have caught one. Tomorrow students will reflect on how they think they could improve their traps and what they would do different next time.
