I cannot believe that the first quarter is almost over. This school year is flying by! We have been learning so much in first grade. Students are fully working in their Daily 5 centers and enjoying them everyday. Please be on the look out for guided reading books to come home weekly (after we are finished with them) that can be kept at home.
I've attached a picture from the beautiful wedding Mr. H and I attending in the 1000 Islands this weekend. We braved the cold for a few minutes to get a shot by the water. :)

I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend. The weather on Saturday was absolutely perfect. Mr. H and I ran the SAS 5k and couldn't have asked for better weather.
We are doing the "All for Books Coin Challenge" this week (one week before the book fair). Students can bring in coins to donate each day! I have a jar in our classroom that the coins will go into when they are brought in each day.

I hope everyone was able to stay safe during the hurricane days we had. I'm thankful to be back at school with my fabulous firsties. Please note that I have uploaded some resources for you to use at home. Please also check for your child's group. All the kiddos are grouped by animals. You can use the resources in your child's animal group to help with the word sorts at home. Each child knows what animal group they are in!
We have officially begun our second full week of first grade. We are having a great time. We are really getting into the groove with all the new rules and expectations. Our big focus the past week has been "read to self" and building our stamina. We started out school being able to "read to self" for 2 minutes and today we made it all the way to 7 minutes. Our goal is to make it to 20 minutes by the 20th day of trying. Some of the rules of read to self are: get started right away, stay in one spot, read quietly, read the whole time, and these are all ways to build our stamina.
Our class will be running for the bus on Wednesday, May 2nd from 9:30-10:00. We are looking for volunteers to help with the run and count student laps. If you are free, please come help our class out!
We had a great time on Friday learning about Earth Day. Sadie's mom came in to do a really fun lesson with us on protecting the earth and climate change. Each student got a piece of white bread and painted an earth in the middle using milk dyed with blue and green food coloring. Then, we put the bread into the toaster to watch that the milk spread when their earth was warmed up. The students enjoyed learning, but we think they loved devouring their milk and toast even more! :)
I hope everyone had a wonderful spring break! I'm certainly looking forward to some warm spring weather. Mr. H and I did a lot of traveling over spring break. We went up to New York to visit both of our families and attend a wedding.
We have a crazy week back! On Tuesday is our field trip to the Museum of Life and Science. An email will be coming home this evening with all the information you will need. On Wednesday, we have a puppet show on character education, on Thursday TMSA will be holding STEM night. I will be here for this session, so I hope to see you. Thank you so much for all of your recycled goods and donations to our classroom for our STEM leprechaun trap building adventure. We had 6 different groups with 6 different traps. They were very creative, but we didn't catch a leprechaun. We did have a leprechaun come and destroy all the traps, but he was nice enough to leave us some gold coins. We'll take it. In our STEM journals we discussed and wrote about how to make our traps better next time. I think the class will be able to catch a leprechaun next year!
